Iswara Gandrung Dance, Traditional Dance From West Java

Iswara Gandrung dance is one of the traditional dances originating from West Java. This dance is inspired by the love story of Nyi Roro Kidul. Iswara Gandrung dance is one of the traditional dances that are quite popular in West Java and still often performed in events, such as welcoming big guests, weddings and also other events.




The Origin of Iswara Gandrung Dance


Iswara Gandrung dance is a depiction of a very feared figure in this South Beach area. The mystical aroma that shade from the legend of Nyi Roro Kidul is like never eroded by time. As ruler of the South Coast, Nyi Roro Kidul seems to be a legend in two cultures, Java and Sunda. Iswara Gandrung dance is like reminding back the figure of Nyi Roro Kidul with all its charm.




Dance Show Iswara Gandrung


In the show, Iswara Gandrung Dance is usually danced by 7 (seven) dancers. This dance opens with dancers marching back to the stage. Meanwhile, the music and the accompanist who accompanied this dance have begun to accompany the dancers with songs in Sundanese language poetry.



Gradually the dancers begin to perform graceful movements and then form an oblique position on the stage. Finger-fingered fingers and very keen eye gaze from the dancers, making this dance so interesting to see.



Dance Iswara Gandrung more interesting when the movement of the dancers to be faster and also lancer. Movement of the more dynamic is followed by the accompaniment of the faster music. In one movement, the dancers form a pyramid formation, then the figure of Nyi Roro Kidul represented by one dancer up the formation, as if Nyi Roro Kidul was occupying his throne.

In the show, Iswara Gandrung Dance is usually accompanied by the strains of traditional gamelan instruments. With the musical accompaniment, making the show Iswara Gandrung Dance is more alive.




Iswara Gandrung Dance Clothing


Clothing that is used in Iswara Gandrung Dance is a green dress. The green color is like symbolizing the favorite color of the queen complete with the crown of jasmine flowers as a cover on the head part. This jasmine flower is said to be the favorite flower of Nyi Roro Kidul.




The Development of Iswara Gandrung Dance


In its development, Iswara Gandrung Dance is still continuously preserved and learned by some art galleries that are there. In addition to being featured on major events, this dance is also often performed at other events such as guest reception and cultural festivals. This is done as an effort in preserving and introducing to the public about the art of Iswara Gandrung Dance.

All About Me - Heart Maps to Start the Year

I am always looking for creative ways to get to know my students. I also love creative ideas that we can use to introduce them to some of the tools we use throughout the year. The past several years I have modeled our use of Padlet with a 7 Pictures – All About Me Project. This year I was inspired by  Marwa Elkelani to try something a little different. A heart map is a visual map that uses drawing, text, shapes, and images to share feelings, people and places you love, memories, experiences, and more. These can be created on paper or digitally. I think Canva , Adobe Express , Google Drawings, or Google Slides could all be used to facilitate the creation of these digitally. I am going to focus on Google Drawings and Google Slides for this post.
